Their aging legacy platform was holding them back, especially as their business served both wholesale and retail customers with growing expectations and their existing system didn’t offer the tools, automation, or connectivity they needed to keep up with the demand.

Approach / Work Done

The client's existing platform left too much to chance: inventory mismatches, static catalogs, and a sluggish update process were slowing things down. Our goal was to fix the issues cleanly and comprehensively, as these pain points were slowing down the business and frustrating both the internal client team and customers.

What We Delivered:
  • Custom Storefront Development: Started with a deep discovery phase to understand the client's workflows and align them with BigCommerce's capabilities. Rather than reinvent the wheel, we chose a pre-built theme from the BigCommerce marketplace and heavily customized it including adjusting typography, colors, layout, and navigation to serve both retail and wholesale buyers. The result felt native to the brand, but flexible enough to grow with it.
  • Real-Time Parts Finder: Built a fitment search tool powered by the ATD API, using AJAX to keep things fast and fluid. Shoppers could now select their vehicle’s make, model, and year from cascading dropdowns and get accurate matches instantly. It was a major step up from their old static catalog.
  • Custom Middleware for Syncing Data: To keep everything in sync, we developed middleware that handled scheduled and on-demand updates. It pushed product data from ATD (American Tire Distributors) into BigCommerce, enriching the catalog with new items, removing discontinued ones, updating prices, and refreshing inventory. Every sync was mapped carefully to BigCommerce’s data model to ensure smooth delivery.
  • Inventory Accuracy at Scale: For high-velocity items, we enabled real-time SKU-level inventory checks directly via the ATD API. A fallback sync kept the full catalog updated in the background, so availability stayed accurate even during peak demand.
  • SEO and Accessibility Foundation: We built in key SEO improvements as structured meta content, schema markup, and speed tuning. The ADA-readiness package included keyboard-friendly navigation, properly labeled elements, and semantically correct HTML, giving the site a more accessible and inclusive baseline.
  • Tax and Tracking Tools: We set up Avalara AvaTax to handle real-time tax calculations based on buyer location. On top of that, we guided the client through integrating Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, and address verification tools using BigCommerce’s built-in features and app marketplace.

Project Results

Although the client ultimately had to delay the site’s full launch due to financial challenges, the work delivered a solid technical base for future growth. The integration handled complex API connections behind the scenes while making the shopping experience easier up front. Fitment lookups were quick and accurate. Inventory and pricing could be kept in sync with minimal manual work. Once live, the system was positioned to support the client’s operations at scale and with fewer headaches and more control.
