Project Overview

Jon Renau has been a trusted name in wigs and alternative hair since 1985, known for early breakthroughs in heat-friendly fibers and lace front designs. From their base in Carlsbad, California, they’ve built a reputation for blending product quality with a genuine, customer-first mindset. As their online store grew, so did the complexity of their needs. They ran into limits when trying to feature sale items filtered by things like size or brand. Their product pages also couldn’t adjust in real time to reflect discounted variants, which sometimes led to confusing experiences for shoppers. On top of that, an aging BigCommerce theme was slowing down the site and creating unnecessary hurdles at checkout - costing both conversions and long-term flexibility.

Approach / Work done

As the business evolved, Jon Renau needed more from their online store - faster load times, smarter merchandising tools, and a smoother way to showcase sales. They needed a way to better highlight sale items - specifically, to filter by size, brand, and other key attributes without creating extra work. At the same time, their product detail pages lacked the flexibility to show only discounted variants during promotions, which made sale events feel disjointed. And behind it all was a dated theme that slowed down the site and introduced friction at checkout, making it harder for shoppers to complete their purchases smoothly.

What We Delivered:
  • Dynamic Sale Categories: Built a custom logic layer in BigCommerce that automatically surfaces sale items based on selected attributes. The new pseudo-categories let Jon Renau run focused promotions with more precision, without creating clutter or confusion.
  • Customized PDP for Sale Visibility: Updated the product detail pages to keep things simple and clear during sales. Full-priced or out-of-stock variants are hidden automatically, so the focus stays on what’s actually available and on sale.
  • Theme Upgrade for Performance: Migrated the store to Cornerstone v6.16.0 and carried out a full UI/UX parity review. Every custom script and integration was manually reviewed and updated to fit the new structure.
  • Key rebuilds during theme upgrade included:
    • Product pages, cart, navigation, subscription forms, and footers
    • Over 20 layout changes and module adjustments
    • Thorough sandbox end-to-end testing and ERP sync checks

Project Results

With cleaner sale logic and better PDPs, Jon Renau now has more control over how they run promotions - and customers benefit from a more focused and relevant experience. Bounce rates during sales dropped, and shoppers spent more time with products that matched their intent. The theme upgrade also made a clear difference: faster load times, smoother checkouts, and fewer abandoned carts. In long-term the new setup gives Jon Renau a reliable base for future updates and continued growth.
